My latest work “A Bostonian two-masted schooner” is a ship sailing near the Castle Island, Boston. I used the Impressionistic Style, so the faces of the people are blurry and the colors maintain a fairly dark shade to demonstrate the play of light.
Castle Island is a place where you can not only play and enjoy the view, but you can also see the ships coming in and out of the bay, and watch the planes take off and land, due to its close proximity to Boston’s Logan International Airport. I have always enjoyed watching the ships and planes. This two-masted schooner sailing in the waters is always a pleasant sight and I had often thought about painting one. While looking through the photos which we always take when we go there, I found this picture. The minute I saw it, I thought to myself, “This would be a good painting.”
I started off by focusing on the ocean and the sky. I made the clouds look fluffy to give it a spongy effect. I then worked on the ship. I tried to make the people on board the ship to look clear enough to see the clothes and head, but not too detailed to view their faces. I also tried to make the ship and it’s masts look as neat and clean as possible. Once the main work was done, I took time to improve on the finer details, such as the grass and forest in the background, and detailing the ship’s reflection in the ocean.
This view interested me because I liked how calm the water was despite the waves, the airy and fluffy clouds, the amazing ship with rustic looks in the middle. I also feel good about painting this view because I know how much a Bostonian loves the water and it is so much a part of the culture here.
