Store-brought food is an easy way to get the food you love without having to work for it. However, many times, the consequences of buying it, such as an excess amount of preservatives, can outweigh it’s easy accessibility. Thus, making certain food items from scratch sometimes becomes a healthier, more cost-efficient way to get the food you desire.
While thinking about this, it came to my attention that we buy basil pesto every week and many of its ingredients were unfamiliar, not to mention the amount of preservatives it contained. This made me think, “what if I made pesto by myself?” After all, it would be healthier, may be more cost-efficient and a great skill to learn.
Since I never made pesto before, it took me some time and effort to find a suitable recipe with the ingredients at hand. Much to my delight, the end product came out much better than expected and almost tasted like the store brought bottle. In future attempts, I want to experiment with different amounts of oil, cheese and ingredients.
All in all, it was an interesting and very rewarding experience, and I think it has given me a good baseline to build on.
