Top Chef: Exploring International Cuisine

0

A few months ago, in my Geography class, we learnt about the cuisine in different countries in a fun and exciting way. Top Chef was a competition where every kid had to research and present about the cuisine of a country, assigned by spinning what we know as the Wheel of Destiny. We would research on the country’s staple foods. The research led to the climax of the competition: deciding on a dish to make/sketch for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The catch: Each dish must have a big change (you can’t just make/sketch fried chicken and only switch the Chicken with Pork. It has to be a bigger twist).

For me, the Wheel of Destiny pointed to Iran. To stay under the radar, I did a Tomato, Bell Pepper and Cucumber Salad with a decomposed Grilled Skewered Chicken, served with Yogurt and Mint Sauce, and naan bread. The twist was – the bell pepper I added to the salad and the Skewered Grilled Chicken being made without the skewer. Like I said earlier, we either make the dish or sketch the dish. We would get an additional 10 points if we decided to cook the dish. The denouement of the assignment was presenting it to the whole class. Between the people who decided to cook the dish, a winner from each category (dessert, appetizer, entrée) was selected. It was a great way to learn and share about the cuisine in different countries.
