On June 27, hours after Chile beat Argentina 4-2 on penalties to win the Copa Americá Centenario, the world of international football faced a substantial blow – the retirement announcement from arguably the best player in the world, Lionel Messi. This shocked many, especially because of the fact that he is only 29 years old. While many mourn this loss, many say that this could be a good thing, as this gives other young players, players who will be the next generation of Argentine football, a chance to experience how it is to play for the national team.
However, many say this is just an act, and he will come back. They say he did it because he always gets criticized by the media if he doesn’t win a championship. So, if he showed he’s not afraid to retire, they’ll show him respect.
Also, a statue of Messi was made in his honor in Buenos Aires, and the mayor has pleaded Messi to come back, with the World Cup in two years.
I believe Messi will take another chance with the blue and white Argentine stripes, and return to the International pitch.
So far, he is Argentina’s all-time leading scorer, scoring 55 goals in 103 appearances.
